South Staffordshire Housing Association (SSHA) has organised a series of public consultation events which will offer local residents and other key stakeholders the opportunity to give their views on the design of the new homes.
All are welcome to attend the events on Saturday 21st January between 2pm and 5pm at the Haling Dene Centre, Cannock Road, Penkridge, or on Wednesday 25th January between 4pm and 7pm at the same venue.
The association’s proposals represent an investment of some £13 million, including £1.1 million of government funding. They will provide 82 high quality purpose-built apartments within a modern, light and airy building that will also include a café, restaurant, hairdressing salon and gym for use by residents and the wider community.
Debbie Griffiths, Chief Executive of SSHA said “We’ve been discussing ideas and the need for this scheme with Penkridge Parish Council, South Staffordshire Council, Staffordshire County Council and other local stakeholders, following concerns locally about the loss of the Silverdene nursing home that previously occupied much of the site.
“We’re very excited to be unveiling our plans for what promises to be a real flagship development in South Staffordshire, which as many people know has one of the highest proportions of older people in the country. We hope as many people as possible will come along to see our plans and give us their views ahead of us submitting our formal planning application to South Staffordshire Council in February.”
Cllr Matthew Ellis, Cabinet Member for Adult Wellbeing at Staffordshire County Council, said: “Staffordshire is a national leader in the development of extra care homes. Because where people live is so important to their quality of life, we put in place ambitious plans to increase the number of extra care places available to buy or rent across Staffordshire from 430 two years ago to 1500 by 2013.
“In fact, by then, more than 2000 will have been achieved meaning more opportunities for people who want to remain independent in their own home can do so safe in the knowledge that care if needed is available without being intrusive.”
If the association’s application is approved, work on site could begin as soon as May 2012, with anticipated completion by September 2013. Care Plus, which along with SSHA is part of the Housing Plus Group, will be managing the scheme, which will include options for care and support packages tailored around each residents needs and wishes.
