Ready… steady… BAKE!

With the Great British Bake Off making its eagerly-anticipated return to our screens, residents, relatives and staff at Waterfield House in Wombourne held their own baking contest.

In the place of Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, a relative of a resident at Waterfield House had the unenviable task of choosing between the show-stopping cakes.

With marks awarded for presentation alone, the star bakers of Waterfield House were:

1st place: resident Janet Lowe with her tempting chocolate cake

2nd place: staff member Lisa Gibbons with her zingy orange cake

3rd place: manager of engagement, volunteer and fundraising Yvette Tompkins for her traditional Victoria sponge.

Each of the winners stepped forward to receive an Olympic-style medal and trophy proving their culinary credentials.

After the competition, visitors had the opportunity to taste some of the delicious bakes via an auction. The auction and raffle raised £156.80 for the residents’ fund.

Jo Davies, supported housing officer at Waterfield House was impressed by the skill of all the bakers taking part in the event: “It was lovely to see so many people getting involved and supporting our fundraising. The standard of baking was amazing and people went to so much trouble – the cakes looked really professional,” she said.
