World Suicide Prevention Day

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, a chance for organisations and communities around the world to come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.

Every 90 minutes, someone in the United Kingdom or Ireland takes their own life. It is more common among men than women, with men aged 50-54 years being most at risk.

To support our people, our customers and the communities we serve we are helping our colleagues to spot the warning signs.

Our Property Plus operatives will be taking part in special Toolbox Talks about the vital role they can play in supporting people who may be having suicidal feelings.

The Toolbox Talks will be led by our Safeguarding Committee and will discuss how to identify the warning signs of suicide and what to do if you feel someone is at risk.

Our Safeguarding lead and Executive director of housing and care, Les Clarke, said: “World Suicide Prevention Day is a valuable opportunity to speak openly about suicide and reduce the stigma surrounding it.

“At Homes Plus, we all share a safeguarding responsibility to keep our customers safe from harm, regardless of our role, that’s why we are helping our colleagues to spot the warning signs of suicide so that they can raise any concerns and help to support people who may be experiencing these feelings.”

If you are worried about a possible safeguarding problem in your neighbourhood, please speak up. All you need to do is contact your local safeguarding board. You can find details about how to contact them on our Safeguarding page.

If you believe that there is a risk of immediate danger, call the police on 999 in an emergency.

Remember, you are not alone. Samaritans is there day or night, for anyone who is struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure. If you are struggling, you can contact Samaritans any time of the day or night by phoning 116 123 or emailing jo@Samaritans.org
