The Sandford holds ‘trip down memory lane’ to mark International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every year on May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth.

To celebrate, nurses at The Sandford Nursing Home, which is part of Care Plus, dressed up in nursing uniforms through the ages, so colleagues, residents and visitors had a chance to see the wide variety of uniforms, badges and belts worn throughout the years.

They were also treated to a party where gifts were handed out to our nurses, to show our appreciation for the amazing job they do.

Leesha Crocombe, manager at The Sandford, said: “I started working in care even before I left school, making cups of teas in a residential home and I just decided to keep going and became a nurse.

“After all the hard work that nurses do, International Nurses’ Day gives them time to sit back and take five minutes to feel appreciated.”

We asked Leesha what she enjoys most about being a nurse and what qualities she believes a good nurse needs to possess.

She said: “I just enjoy being with different people and learning about their lives, everyone’s individual and everyone’s got a story to tell.

“I’d say a good nurse needs compassion and enthusiasm, they’re the main things for me, they are in your blood. If you’ve got that, you’re well away and everything else can be taught.”

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every year on May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth.

Our executive director of housing and care, Les Clarke, is a qualified nurse on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register for nurses.

He said: “We are proud to support International Nurses Day and show our appreciation of the great job our nurses do. It is important to celebrate this hard-working profession and show our thanks to all our nurses.”
